Medicaid Expansion can lower rate of uninsured population of Texas

A recent US Census Bureau report has unveiled that Texas has the record of largest uninsured population in the nation. Though the percentage of uninsured people is on decline, experts think the rate would fall faster if Medicaid is expanded in the state.

Advocates of Medicaid expansion have been asking for the expansion, but experts said advocates are not paying attention to the research that shows that Medicaid patients have poor health outcomes and the growth of the program’s cost is not sustainable.

It is being considered that it is high time now that the Medicaid program should be reformed in order to improve access to quality health care. It has happened for the first time in Texas history that owing to significant high Medicaid costs, more has been spent on health care than on education.

As per a data, Medicaid is now responsible for 23% of general revenue appropriations in the current budget. Now, the problem is if Texas expands Medicaid and does not receive sufficient funds than state costs will continue to increase. Similar thing happened in Ohio and many other states where the actual expansion cost has increased the projected amount.

There is a solution to solve the problem and that is the Texas Medicaid Reform Model. In it, the state will receive a lump sum of federal funds and more flexibility over the program.
