Maruti Suzuki now welcomes decision to allow quadricyclesIndia's leading automaker, Maruti Suzuki has changed its views on allowing quadricycles in the country and has described the government's decision to permit quadricycles on Indian roads as a good decision after initially opposing the move in the country.

It is believed that that company was against the move to allow quadricycles over the issues related to safety in India.  However, the company said that it was never against the idea of allowing quadricycles and that it shares the views with the government on the matter.  It also stated that it is not planning to get into the segment.

"The government has taken a very good decision.  It's a sound and sensible decision," said R C Bhargvava, Maruti Suzuki chairman.  He was speaking on the side-lines of the annual convocation ceremony of National Institute of Industrial Engineering.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways gave its approval for quadricycles, which will be in a new four-wheeler category between three-wheelers and entry-level cars.  The ministry said that the central motor vehicle rules will be amended and relevant norms will be notified soon.  The vehicles will be allowed only for taxi and cargo purposes on Indian roads and thus the consumers will not be able to use it as personal vehicles.  The government has approved the proposed 450 kg weight for quadricycles in the country.
