Many plastic clogs have alarming amounts of chemical substances

Frankfurt, Germany - Fans of plastic clogs should trust their sense of smell and steer clear of unpleasant smelling shoes.

Most plastic clogs, which have been on the market for only a few years, contain questionable or controversial substances, according to the July edition of a German consumer magazine published in Frankfurt. Buyers should also be aware that even plastic clogs that have a neutral smell can be suspicious.

Socks or anklets can protect the skin somewhat from toxic substances, according to testers who reported their findings in the magazine Oeko-Test. They found most plastic clogs have an elevated concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons or PAHs, which are a concern because some compounds in them have been identified as carcinogenic and some have been found to alter genetic material.

Some clogs were found to have elevated amounts of lead, chromium or cadmium. Chemicals used to make the clogs soft were found to be less problematic. The magazine, however, concluded that there was only one brand that could be recommended without restrictions. (dpa)
