Manmohan Singh says transit facilities will benefit both India and Bangaldesh

Manmohan Singh says transit facilities will benefit both India and BangaldeshNew Delhi, Sep 5: Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh insists that Bangladesh should not worry over the issue of offering transit facilities to India for getting easy access to the country.

"I see no reason for Bangladesh to be fearful of improving transport and infrastructure connectivity with India," Dr. Singh had said in an interview to Bangladesh's national news agency BSS ahead of his two-day visit.

"There is a lot that can be done for the benefit of both countries in this regard, including through inland waterways," he added.

Transit through Bangladesh has been one of India's long-standing requests.

During the Prime Minister's visit, India is also expected to hand over 111 enclaves to Bangladesh and in return get 51 enclaves.

This is a historic confidence building measure that could improve the lives of thousands of people of Indian and Bangladeshi origin trapped in villages on the border since its creation in 1971. (ANI)
