Malaysia to restrict parliament access on security concerns

Kuala Lumpur  - Malaysia to restrict parliament access on security concernsMalaysia will bar visitors from parliament ruing a planned opposition rally urging a no-confidence vote against Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, reports said Sunday.

Chief of Staff Mohamed Nazri Aziz cited security concerns in allowing only members of parliament and on-duty police officers to enter the building Monday.

"I was informed that irrespective of whether the notice of no- confidence against Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is accepted or rejected, a big demonstration will be held within or outside the parliament compound," Aziz said Sunday.

The police have also set up roadblocks in twelve of the main roads leading into the city of Kuala Lumpur, in anticipation of the Monday demonstration.

Advising the public to refrain from participating in the rally, police chief Muhammad Sabtu Osman said all roads leading to parliament will be off limits to motorists and pedestrians Monday.

Opposition leaders described the ban as ridiculous and paranoid, while vowing to mobilize supporters to join the demonstration. (dpa)
