Lucid recalls Air e-sedan to fix sudden loss of drive, coolant failure

American electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Lucid Motors faces a significant challenge as its flagship all-electric sedan, the Lucid Air, has been recalled due to critical safety issues. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Lucid Air e-sedan has been recalled after several reports of issues with the EV’s sudden power loss and coolant system failures in certain models that were built between 2022 and 2024. The just-announced recall underscores the ongoing challenges in the fast-evolving electric car, pointing to the need of strict safety measures and unremitting software updates

According to the NHTSA’s report, Lucid issued the recall of the Air e-sedan after it observed around a dozen instances of abrupt loss of drive because of a fault in the EV’s high voltage system.

In its statement to the regulator, the manufacturer stated, “Lucid has determined that in 5,251 model year 2022 and 2023 U.S. vehicles manufactured prior to December 2022, the possibility of intermittent hardware connections leading to loss of drive power while in Drive or Reverse due to HVIL logic poses an unreasonable risk to safety. The 10 occurrences in 5,251 Affected Vehicles are a 0.2% rate.”

The recall issued by Lucid also includes another significant safety concern. The company identified as many as 74 Air e-sedans built before February last year that failed to defrost their windshield, potentially hampering the drivers’ field of vision, increasing the risk of an accident. According to the company, it was due to a faulty High Voltage Coolant Heater (HVCH).

While the aforementioned issues of power loss and defrost system failure may concern thousands of Lucid Air e-sedans, the estimated rate of defect is merely 1 per cent or even less than it. To correct these potentially dangerous issues, the EV maker said all Lucid Air owners need to received and install updates for the software. The manufacturer has already started notifying them by email on how to do that. They can seek help from authorized dealerships at no cost.

The Lucid Air’s recall highlights the intricacies and risks associated with advanced EV technology. Though the aforementioned defects affect only a tiny fraction of EVs, yet it highlights the potential safety hazards. Lucid’s proactive approach to addressing these issues demonstrates its commitment to ensure reliability of its products as well as guarantee consumer safety. At the same time, such incidents remind automakers as well as consumers of the importance of attentiveness and responsiveness in upholding vehicle safety standards.
