Lift ban on sale of uranium to India: Australia Minister
The current uranium sales policy is being reviewed by Australian Federal Resource Minister, Martin Ferguson. According to him, Labour government should lift the ban on the sale of uranium to India because India deserves special consideration.
He said that when it comes to India the government should bring some flexibility and some modernization in the policy.
Mr. Ferguson also said that he is asking Labour government to change its uranium sales policy for India only and he is not forcing the Labour government to lift its ban of uranium sale to countries outside the nuclear non- proliferation treaty.
Mr. Ferguson has delivered his comments after media disclosed that U. S. cable supplied to Wikileaks indicated a nuclear fuel deal with India was being seen in the coming three to five years.
A report said that on Wednesday, the Australian Workers’ Union (AWU) is expected to pass a resolution supporting expansion of uranium mining and give approval to a debate on nuclear power.
However, in the meeting held last month between Mr. Ferguson and External Affairs Minister S. M. Krishna, Mr. Ferguson told Mr. Krishna the attitude of his party for not selling the yellow metal to India. But he also said that it is expected that party will organize a controversial debate on reversing Labour’s current uranium sales policy later this year in its next national conference.
