Liem clinches Kolkata Open titleVietnamese GM Le Quang Liem has won the title of 4th Kolkata Open Chess tournament after playing a draw against IM S Satyapragyan in the final round at Alekhine Chess Club, Gorky Sadan, on Thursday. Liem won cash reward of Rs 3 lakh with title.

Liem earned total 8 points to finish at the top while Shakhriyar Mamedyarov stood at second position with 7.5 points and pocketed a cheque of Rs 2 lakh. Local GMs Sandipan Chanda and Surya Sekhar Ganguly finished at fourth and eighth positions respectively.

After the title win, Liem said that he was not expecting title win in the starting of the event but he became sure to do it after winning 9th round match against Anton Filippov. Liem had also won gold medal in the world U-14 boys’ championship in 2005.

The top seeded GM Shakhriyar Mamedyarov of Azerbaijan defeated defending champion GM Viktor Laznicka of the Czech Republic to finish at the second place. GM Anton Filippov of Uzbekistan ended at the third position after win against GM Ni Hua of China.
