LeBron James, who led the Cleveland Cavaliers to a league-best 66 wins and the top seed in the playoffs, was named NBA's Most Valuable Player on Monday.

James received 1,172 points from a panel of 121 sportswriters and broadcasters to easily outdistance last year's MVP Kobe Bryant of the

Lakers (698 points) and Miami's Dwyane Wade (680).

Already in his sixth season, the 24-year-old James received the honour after averaging 28.4 points, 7.2 rebounds and 7.6 assists en route to carrying the Cavaliers to a franchise-record 66-13 record.

The versatile 6-8, 260-pound James hasn't slowed down in the playoffs, averaging 32 points, 11.3 rebounds and 7.5 assists as the Cavaliers easily swept the Detroit Pistons 4-0 in the first-round of their Eastern Conference series.

James, who finished second in the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year voting to Orlando's Dwight Howard, will be honoured on Tuesday night before Cleveland hosts the Atlanta Hawks in Game 1 of their semifinal series.(dpa)
