Kerry to engage in Iran nuclear deadline by June-end
On Friday afternoon, US Secretary of State John Kerry came out from a Massachusetts hospital on crutches after treatment for a broken leg.
He said that he was committed to travel for a key deadline in talks with Iran over its nuclear program.
He emphasized the importance of the deadline, which is June 30. Kerry said he has planned to fly to Europe for the final diplomatic push in order to curb Iran's nuclear program in exchange for relief from economic sanctions.
Kerry was hospitalized after breaking his right femur in a bicycle accident while in Switzerland last month, after meeting his counterpart, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.
After this incident, the central question was whether it would affect negotiations between Iran and six major powers that are seeking to strike an agreement.
He said, "I will be absolutely, fully and totally engaged in those talks. I am now. I haven't missed a tick I'll be traveling over there at the appropriate moment in the next days in order to press forward at this critical moment in the negotiations. So there's a lot of work on the table".
Kerry mentioned that he has planned to join the talks after the June 22-24 strategic and economic dialogue with China in Washington. Although lower level talks have taken place in Vienna, it is still not clear where the final round will occur.
