Karri Combs urges people to get their annual flu shot to prevent flu

Karri Combs, RN at the Grundy County Health Department, is compelling residents to get their yearly flu vaccine. The flu shot is effectual against four strains of flu virus: two type A flus and two type B flus.

Combs added that an individual above the age of 6 months should get the shot done. While coming to the health department to get the yearly vaccine, one thing needs to be considered that whether a person is allergic to eggs, if so then it will be mandatory to get the vaccine from an allergist who will handle his or her egg allergy, she said.

The flu vaccines have a little amount of egg, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). There is a problem to give flu vaccines for allergic people as they require an allergist to monitor their allergy and the health department don’t have any allergist, Combs said.

Combs mentioned that she guarantees the public cannot get the flu from the flu shot, as earlier, the flu shot had been under a debate that people assume they are getting the flu because of the flu shot.

“It is very important for a woman who is pregnant to get the flu shot. If a pregnant woman gets critically ill with the flu, there is a 25 to 30 percent mortality rate”, Combs mentioned.

Combs said it’s vital for a community to get the vaccine as the flu is communicable.
