June tourist arrivals down in Austria despite Euro 2008
Vienna - Austria's tourism industry did not feel the windfall of the 2008 Euro championships, as the host country recorded 4.3 per cent fewer arrivals in June compared with June 2007, the Austrian statistics office said Friday.
Only small Euro host cities like Klagenfurt and Innsbruck welcomed significantly more tourists during the championships, which Austria co-hosted with Switzerland.
In Vienna, the number of overnight bookings rose only 1.2 percent in June year-on-year. Traditionally, Vienna hosts large conventions in June, but this year, organizers booked other cities during the Euro.
The decrease was most marked among German tourists. Overnight stays from Germans were down by 436.000, 12.2 per cent lower than last year.
The statistics office did not make a connection between the football tournament and the lower number of guests. Instead, it said that some holidays had fallen on May this year, rather than June, causing travellers to take earlier vacations. (dpa)
