Jet Airways mulling plan to buy more planes from Boeing

Jet Airways mulling plan to buy more planes from BoeingJet Airways (India) Ltd has confirmed that it is planning to purchase more single-aisle 737 planes from American plane maker Boeing Co.

Revealing the plan, Jet Airways' senior vice president of commercial strategy K. G. Vishwanath said, "We are contemplating placing another round of Boeing 737 planes."

Vishwanath, however, did not disclose the number of planes or a precise time-frame for buying more planes from the American plane maker.

Previously, the carrier had placed an order for 46 planes with Boeing. The arrival of the planes will boost the carrier's domestic seat capacity by nearly 8 per cent per year over the next three years.

Jet Airways is trying to boost its capacity as it along with its foreign partner Etihad Airways has plans to connect nearly 23 domestic destinations with Abu Dhabi by the year 2016.

Harsh Vardhan, chairman of Starair Consulting, said Jet Airways definitely required more planes to fight for a bigger share in the highly competitive market; and with Etihad on board, the carrier had the resopurces to do that.

Moreover, the Indian carrier is under pressure to expand its fleet to fend off competition from upcoming budget airline AirAsia India - a joint venture among Malaysian carrier AirAsia, Tata group and Arun Bhatia of Telstra Tradeplace Private Ltd.
