Intel previews tablets powered by new Atom Z2760 chip and Windows 8 OS

intelAt a Thursday event in San Francisco, chip giant Intel previewed a number of new tablet computers which are equipped with a new microprocessor which the company has specifically designed for grabbing a bigger share in the ever-growing mobile arena.

The tablets displayed by Intel comprised products from leading computer vendors; and all the devices were powered by a new Intel processor – called the Atom Z2760 - and Microsoft’s forthcoming Windows 8 OS, which is a notably revamped version of the Windows operating system and has been optimized for tablets.

The tablets showcased at the event will hit the markets on or around October 26, which is the scheduled release date for the Windows 8 OS. The vendors will disclose the pricing of the devices in the coming weeks.

About the new Atom Z2760 chip, Intel said that the chip is capable of giving the recently-displayed tablets a leading edge, both in terms of speed and energy-efficiency; thanks largely to its dual-processing feature.

With the mentioned feature leading to a much lower consumption of power so as to enhance battery life to up to 10 hours while viewing videos or performing other tasks, the new Intel chip – which was codenamed ‘Clover Trial’ when it was being developed – resolves the key ‘high power consumption’ issue with the previous Intel chips that were deemed unsuitable for tablets.
