Innocent comic caper

If one couple could break the 'K' ceiling of the small screen with their droll, it was this couple — Disha Vakani and Dilip Joshi — whose innocent humour has milled its way into thousands of Indian hearts. After doing cameos in films such as Jodhaa Akbar and Hum Apke Hain Koun, both Disha and Dilip found their destiny on the small screen. The entire team of the comedy serial, Taarak Mehta ka Ooltah Chashmah, visited Ahmedabad to celebrate the completion of 100 episodes. After Hrs caught up with the duo to get a glimpse into their reel and real life.

A graduate in dramatics from Gujarat college, Disha was a student at Kadamb and learnt Kathak for one and a half years from Kumudiniben Lakhia, but quit it half way; a decision she regrets the most till date. Basking in the glory of her character 'Daya', which bagged her, the coveted ITAA (Indian Television Academy Award) for best comedian, Disha is on cloud nine with all the attention she has been getting now. “It feels great to share this award with Supriya Pathak,” gushed Disha, who went on to admit that she wasn't expecting this character to be so successful. Albeit a bit irritating, but the innocent charm that her character oozes have charmed thousands of viewers across ages. “My producer Asitkumarji and Dilipji suggested that my character should have something that clicks with the viewers. That's the reason my voice modulation has been done in such a way that it becomes cacophonic for my husband.” Agrees co-star and onscreen husband, Dilip, who says that initially the crew was sceptical if she could carry it off for all the episodes, but it being somebody as versatile as Disha, she did it. “She has the capability to perform and I was sure she will do it,” said Dilip with confidence.

Talking about the Dilip, Disha said “Besides being an institute by himself, he has got a down-to-earth attitude and is a patient listener,” complimenting her co-actor who shoots for nearly 12 hours daily.
