Informed Decisions on Most Effective Contraceptives cut Rate of Unintended Pregnancy
A new study has found that if women are counseled on the best forms of birth control, then it can reduce the rate of unwanted pregnancy.
Researchers from the University of California San Francisco shared that hormonal implants and intrauterine devices are the best reversible birth control methods. Less than 1% of women using them will conceive over the course of a year.
However, then also less than 12% of women who reported of using birth control have an IUD or hormonal implant. The researchers said the percentage can be increased through counseling.
An experiment was carried out to know whether educating health care workers on latest innovations and statistics regarding contraceptives would be of some help. The researchers said the method worked as unintended pregnancies among young women dropped by around half.
Study’s lead researcher Cynthia Harper said that new contraceptive methods have come in the market in the past few years. When training was given to clinicians, the researchers noticed that clinicians were able to understand the technicalities of each method, including their benefits, side effects and which is the most appropriate method for patients.
The researchers partnered with 40 Planned Parenthood clinics across 15 states for the study. Half of the clinics received training and others did not. In the study, 1,500 females aged between 18 and 25 were enrolled. Over the course of the study, the pregnancy rate dropped from 15% to 8%.
