India's Sensex surges more than 5 per cent in morning trade

India SensexNew Delhi - Indian stock markets consolidated on previous gains as the bellwether Sensex index rose more than 5 per cent to touch a seven-month high Monday on brisk buying and favourable global cues. The Bombay Stock Exchange's 30-share sensitive index Sensex hit 12,003.44 points, a gain of 600 points or 5.26 per cent at midday.

All the 13 sectoral indices on the BSE were in the green, with metals, banking and technology stocks gaining the most.

It was the first time since October that the Sensex reached the 12,000 mark.

The broader 50-share S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange also gained 4.46 per cent and reached 3,629 points.

Local media reports said investors seemed enthused by positive signs from other Asian markets Monday. (dpa)
