Indian Railways planning to offer Wi-Fi connectivity in trainsIndian Railways has said that it is planning to roll out free Wi-Fi facility to passengers on some of its selected trains.

Passengers will have to get registered for availing the free service while travelling in trains. Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal inaugurated the new Wi-Fi facility in New Delhi-Howrah (12302) Rajdhani Express on Tuesday. The internet service is likely be expanded to other trains depending upon the success of the service for the passengers.

Following the roll out of the service, the New Delhi-Howrah Rajdhani Express has become the first train in the country to offer free Wi-Fi connectivity to its passengers. According to some railway officials, the railways have appointed Techno Set Com for installing Wi-Fi technology in the trains. The officials said that the business class travellers as well as students will benefit from the free service on trains and will add to the facilities provided while travelling on the train.

There are indications that another fifty trains are likely to be connected with the new Wi-Fi service, which will now offer 4 Mbps download bandwidth and 512 Kbps upload bandwidth in trains. Experts say that the speed will be slower as it will be shared by the passengers.
