Indian PC market recovering; shipments rise 24% in July-September quarter
That the Indian PC market is well on its way to sustained recovery is evident from the most recent statistics released on Thursday by research firm IDC, which show was a 24 percent quarterly increase in domestic PC shipments during the July-September quarter.
Though the PC shipments for the quarter remained 3 percent lower on a year-on-year basis, the figures touched 21.9 lakh units during third quarter, largely due to a notable boost in consumer confidence.
At 14.58 lakh quarterly shipments, marking a 15.2 percent quarterly increase, the desktop sales comprised almost two-thirds of the total shipments during the quarter. Meanwhile, the quarter-on- quarter notebook sales soared 46.4 percent to over 7 lakh.
This latest 'IDC India Quarterly PC Tracker 2009 data' indicates the third successive quarterly increase in the country's PC shipment figures, after the numbers plunged from a high of 22.59 lakh units during the same quarter last year to 15.60 lakh units in the October-December quarter.
Commenting on the upbeat statistics, Kapil Dev Singh, IDC India's Country Manager, said: "Overall consumer PC sales recorded a 28% growth quarter-on-quarter. This performance underlines a gradual recovery in the India PC market."
Specifically speaking, both desktop and notebook PC shipments during the July-September quarter were led by Hewlett-Packard (HP); followed by HCL and Acer respectively in the desktop category, and Dell and Acer respectively in the notebook PC shipment category.
