Indian Doctors Perform Exceptional Heart Surgery

Indian Doctors Perform Exceptional Heart SurgeryA remarkable by-pass surgery of a 55 year-old man, whose heart was on the right side, has been completed successfully by a team of doctors at the Chettinad Hospital, earlier this month.

The surgery took 3 and half hours. The chambers, valves and major vessels of the patient's heart were in the reverse position. This condition is called situs inversus solitaris with dextrocardia.

"Performing a coronary artery bypass surgery is technically more demanding on patients who have displacement of heart by intrathoracic structures", said Dr. R. Ravikumar, Director of the Institute of Cardio Vascular Disease, who performed the surgery recently.

He further told that one among 10,000 persons will have this kind of congenital heart displacement.

"This surgery was done under the Tamil Nadu Government's Kalaignar Health Insurance Scheme for Life saving treatment", he added.
