Indian airlines expected to post heavy losses for Dec. quarter
Indian airlines might report heavy losses for the quarter ended December 31, 2013, despite the fact that the third quarter is traditionally the strongest period for airlines, the Center of Asia Pacific of Aviation (Capa) said.
According to the recently released Capa report, domestic airlines could report total estimated losses of Rs 1,065-1,600 crore for the October to December quarter of 2013.
As per the estimates, Jet Airways may report a loss of Rs 400-500 crore, while SpiceJet may witness a loss of Rs 170-215 crore in the December quarter.
Air India is expected to report a loss of Rs 900-1,100 crore; while Jet Airways and SpiceJet may report losses of Rs 400-500 crore and Rs 170-215 crore, respectively, for the December quarter. As per the report, it is possible that Jet Airways' losses in the FY2014 could be nearly 70 per cent of the total combined losses since the year of 2007, which stand at Rs 2,826 crore.
The Capa report said, "When the industry is reporting significant losses in peak season it is clear that the domestic Indian aviation market has a fundamental problem with viability."
Domestic airlines, including Jet Airways and SpiceJet, have been suffering losses on account of various factors, including high operational costs and heavy discounts on fares. For the July-September quarter of 2013, domestic airlines collectively reported a loss of more than Rs 3,000 crore ($500 million).
