India might cancel Finmeccanica deal due to corruption, says AntonyIndia's union Defense Minister A. K. Antony has said that the government ofIndia might be forced to cancel a contract worth $753 million to purchase helicopters from Italy's Finmeccanica SpA id investigations reveals instances of corruption.

The remarks came after Giuseppe Orsi, the Chief Executive Officer of Finmeccanica was arrested in India on suspicions of corruption and tax fraud. The Indian investigators are probing illegal payments involved in the deal for the sale of 12 AW101 helicopters to India in 2010.

Antony said, "We will take the strongest possible action under Indian law, we will not spare anybody. We will not tolerate corruption in defense deals."

CEO's lawyer, Ennio Amodio has described the evidence against his client as inconsistent and said that his arrest is unjustified. According to a media report, India has received three helicopters while the remaining three are expected to be delivered by June and the entire fleet is expected to be complete by March next year.

When asked about the arrest, the defense minister said that he has not been able to access any information relating to the arrest of Orsi. He said was unable to contact the Italian government and prosecutors for the reasons for his arrest in the country.
