India To Have 1500 CNG Gas Stations By 2014-15The administration has decided to establish compressed natural gas (CNG) stations next to all the highways in India by 2013.

The announcement was made by petroleum and natural gas regulator on Friday.

Mr. L. Mansingh, chairman, Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board said, "I expect that in about three years time CNG stations will cover all the highways in the country. This will make CNG more sustainable option for the transportation sector."

Mr. Mansingh was addressing media persons at the launch of Maruti Suzuki's novel series of CNG fitted cars.

He added that the administration is eyeing to launch gas networks in 25 cities by the next three years.

With around 654 CNG gas stations presently for almost 9.35 lakh vehicles, vast regions in India excepting the National Capital, Mumbai as well as Gujarat have a small number of CNG filling stations.

"We have identified geographical areas to set up about 330 distribution centres in the coming five years," Mr. Mansingh added.

It is projected that by the fiscal year 2014-15, India will have approximately 1,500 CNG gas stations.
