Imran Khan faces death penalty after being charged under Pakistan's anti-terror laws
London, Nov. 15: Former cricketer-turned politician Imran Khan could get the death penalty after being charged with violating Pakistan’s anti-terror laws.
According to the Daily Mail, Imran was charged under Pakistan's Anti-Terrorism Act on Wednesday night and is expected to be held in detention for several days before initially being returned to house arrest.
No details of the specific charges were given, but offences under the Act can result in the death sentence or life imprisonment.
Police official Aftab Cheema said: "He created a law and order situation... and caused a disruption in educational activities. "
The Pakistani leader was arrested while addressing students at Lahore's Punjab University on Wednesday.
Some students betrayed Imran, according to the paper. At one moment he was giving the Victory-sign while being carried triumphantly on the students’ shoulders; and in the next, he was bundled into a white van by hardline students and handed over to the police.
It was the first time Imran, whose Movement for Justice Party has little support in Pakistan, had been seen since fleeing house arrest last week.
"I came to the university to lead a rally of students against the dictator Musharraf and his illegal actions, " Imran, speaking by telephone, said later.
"I want the students to be mobilised, as well as lawyers and the political parties, because it has to be a comprehensive movement against the brute force of a military dictator.
"They took me into the office then forced me into a van. They did not allow me to be arrested publicly. I have achieved my purpose. I have started the student movement. I have set the tone for it. " (ANI)
