Image of close-up of bee’s eyes wins prestigious international photography contest

The image that has won the first prize in the 2015 Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition is a close-up of bee's eyes. In all, over 2,000 photographs were submitted for the competition. Of them, 20 were selected as winners.

The first prize winner is Australian photomicrographer Ralph Grimm, who shared that he has spent four hours to capture the beautiful shot. "In a way I feel as though this gives us a glimpse of the world through the eye of a bee. It's a subject of great sculptural beauty", affirmed Grimm.

The second winner's photo gives a closer look at a mouse colon. Researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine in California have submitted the photo that shows the rodent colon has colonized with human microbiota.

The image of a humped bladderwort, a freshwater carnivorous plant, has won the third prize. The image was clicked by Dr. Igor Siwanowicz of Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Virginia.

In addition to the top three winners, Nikon has also awarded to 17 other contestants as well for the beautiful images they have captured. In fact, 12 entrants were given honorable mentions and Nikon's panel of judges has titled 56 as 'Images of Distinction'.

The winning images will be receiving extra benefit as they will be presented in an upcoming calendar and will be exhibited in America as a part of a national museum tour. Nikon has always updated the images that have received first prize in the photomicrography competition and they have been doing it since 1976.
