IIM-A Needs More Faculty, Funds, Infrastructure

Ahmedabad: Samir Barua, the business school's new director said that the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) is facing up three hindrances in its development, which includes faculty, finance and infrastructure.

While talking to media-persons, Mr. Barua attributed the intricacy in getting best faculty to inadequate doctoral programmes in management being offered in India.

This has spoilt the faculty’s supply side on a long-term basis.

He said, “The IIM-A has faculty strength of 85 and we need at least 15 more.”

India has developed into a firm financial system and there has been a universal gratitude of this achievement It is now relatively simple to get faculty from overseas as India is an exciting destination, he said.

He said that the institute was free to take on faculty from overseas.

Keying out funding for expansion plans as one of his direct concerns, Barua said while administration funds would not be undesirable, the IIM-A was now strong enough after five decades of existence to 'raise resources on its own'.

He suggested that he could tap the IIM Society and the large number of former students, many of them in the top echelons of the corporate world, to generate additional funds.

He also said that it was not true that the IIM-A and the ministry were at loggerheads. Even on the issue of fees, 'there is no disagreement,' Barua said.
