Hospitals refuse admitting burn patient

Kolkata: Hospitals refuse to admit a 28-year-old women who was over 90% burnt in a suicide attempt on Monday. Her family members had to wait for about 18 hours for her treatment. They took her to four hospitals.

A resident of Dum Dum Cantonment home, Ms. Lopamudra Mitra, tried to commit suicide in her home around 6.30pm as she was unable to bear her husband's extra-marital affair, said her relatives. Around 7 pm, she was taken to Medical College and Hospital, followed by Kothari Medical Centre and Research Institute and RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The hospital's officials claimed that their burn wards were under-equipped.

RG Kar Medical College and Hospital referred her to the SSKM Hospital. When they rushed to the SSKM Hospital, the hospital authorities denied admission, claiming the shortage of beds at the burn unit. Then she was taken to a private hospital, Calcutta Medical Research Institute (CMRI), but the hospital did not have a burn ward and did not admit her.

After having a hard time her family brought her again to SSKM hospital around 12.30 p. m. and finally she was admitted. First of all she was admitted to the emergency ward and after that shifted to the New Casualty Block. Around Tuesday noon she was admitted to the burns ward. According to a senior official at SSKM Hospital, "There was a severe shortage of beds but despite that we had admitted her and started her treatment. Her condition remains critical as she has suffered more than 90 per cent burns."

Patient's relatives alleged that her condition deteriorated as she had been kept waiting.
