Government ready to have talks on FDI in retail
The Govt. of India has decided to launch discussions between its ministries regarding opening of multi-brand retail to foreign direct investment (FDI). The issue has been under consideration for a long time.
The department of industrial policy and promotion (DIPP) is responsible for framing such foreign investment policies in the country. Now the governing body has to mobilize the issue with the help of other ministries.
It has written to the finance ministry regarding the issue. There has been a talk between the DIPP and the agriculture ministry about the advantages and disadvantages of the move.
DIPP is going to circulate a discussion paper to build consensus on the issue soon. The retail chain of the country is the major section of the Govt. and such move is expected to open up the sector.
It will undoubtedly help to bring down the difference between farm-gate prices and retail prices. Moreover it has been also anticipated that the Govt. may play some more tactical moves for further retail activities in the country.
