Government may slash wheat price for flour mills

K.V. ThomasConcerned over rising inflation and on fire from opposition parties over price rise, the Union Government is expected to come up with some relief for common man by reducing wheat price for domestic flour mills.

The Floor Mills are not interested to buy wheat at Rs 1,400-1,450 per quintal from the stocks of the Food Corp of India which embarked 500,000 tonnes of wheat for sale for bulk consumers during the period between October and December. States are also expected to get additional 1 million tonnes of wheat for selling it to retail customers and bakeries etc.

Country's wheat and rice stock stands at 25.2 million tones and 22.9 million tonnes on December 1, much above the targets of government during the season. Junior Farm Minister K. V. Thomas informed that government is doing everything possible to curtail inflation and a group of ministers might soon take up the matter of lowering the wheat prices for mills and retail customers.

Hoping the next crop season prosperous, the minister added, "There is a surplus supply of rice and wheat. We feel that rabi crops will be good."
