Google's Android Beats iPhone, Threatens BlackBerry

Google's Android Beats iPhone, Threatens BlackBerryThough the Canadian icon BlackBerry continues to retain its top position in the US smart phone market, cellular phones with Google's Android OS may disturb it shortly, a report said.

The report also said that the devices with the Google OS have left Apple's iPhone behind during the first quarterly sales.

Developed by the NPD Group, the US consumer market research company, the report also said that Google's Android OS has disturbed the whole cell phone market, moving past Apple to take the number two rank among smartphone OS.

The report added that the Android OS is presently at second spot with a share of 28%, just behind BlackBerry's 36%. Apple's share is 21%.

Ross Rubin, NPD Group executive director, said, "As in the past, carrier distribution and promotion have played a crucial role in determining smartphone market share."

Android's development has been fuelled by aggressive marketing by the carrier Verizon Wireless. But Google's OS still has a long way to go as it holds just 9% of the US market as compared to iPhone's 25.4%.

The US smart phone market is commanded by four carriers comprising AT&T (32 percent), Verizon Wireless (30 percent), T-Mobile (17 percent) and Sprint (15 percent).

The report comes after a month after Forbes announced during March that BlackBerry's top position over iPhone is going down and it will go beyond the Canadian icon by early 2011. (With Inputs from Agencies)
