German leaders happy to meet Obama, spokesman says

Barak ObamaBerlin - German leaders will be happy to meet the presumptive Democratic nominee for the US presidency, Barack Obama, when he visits Germany this summer, government spokesman Ulrich Wilhelm said in Berlin Monday.

Wilhelm said no precise date had been fixed yet for the Obama visit, although Berlin was aware of Senator Obama's announcement that he intended to visit Europe and meet with Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Merkel and the ranking Social Democrat in her government, Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, would be pleased to meet him, he said. Steinmeier had spoken to Obama in April by phone when the foreign minister was visiting the United States.

Obama has said his itinerary will include Germany, France, Britain and the Middle East. (dpa)
