Georgian president meets opposition after protests

Georgian president meets opposition after protests Tbilisi/Moscow - After four weeks of regular protests, Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili met Monday with opposition leaders to discuss the country's political tensions.

Former presidential candidate Levan Gatchetchiladze said after the meeting, "Both sides have a completely different take on the situation in Georgia.

"Saakashvili believes everything is in going great, while we believe that nothing is in order," he added.

The opposition is continuing to insist on the resignation of Saakashvili, whose term of office is until 2013.

There was no initial comment by Saakashvili about the meeting, which came after weeks of public protests and demands by the opposition for direct talks.

Since early April, thousands have demonstrators have taken to the streets virtually every day, accusing the pro-Western president of ruling in an increasingly autocratic style.

Saakashvili's popularity has declined steadily since the country's war with Russia last August, a conflict which opposition leaders say was brought on by the president. (dpa)
