Greek rioting abates after three days; but protests to continue

Athens  - The situation in the Greek capital Athens calmed down early Tuesday after three days of heavy rioting, triggered by the fatal police shooting of a teenager, media reports said, but unrest was likely to continue.

Violence was concentrated on the area around the Polytechnic University, where several dozen hooded youths were still holding out, but police remained on high alert.

A government spokesman denied reports that a country-wide state of emergency was to be declared.

Late Monday, Athens was ablaze and gripped by chaos while dozens of other cities were crippled for a third straight day by arson and looting in the worst riots in decades.

Men overspend to attract mates

Washington, December 9 : A study from the University of Michigan suggests that men overspend to attract mates.

Lead researcher Daniel Kruger, an assistant research scientist in the School of Public Health, involved in the study a community sample of adults aged 18-45.

He found that the degree of financial consumption was directly related to future mating intentions, and past mating success for men but not for women.

The researcher said that financial consumption was the only factor that predicted how many partners men wanted in the next five years, and also predicted the number of

partners they had in the previous five years.

Army confirms operation against banned organisations

Army confirms operation against banned organisationsIslamabad, Dec. 9 : The Pakistan army confirmed late on Monday it has begun an operation against banned organizations in the wake of the attacks in Mumbai last month, but did not name any organizations.

“There have been arrests and investigations are ongoing,” the Daily Times quoted a statement released by the ISPR, as saying.

The ISPR said that further details of the operations would be released once preliminary investigations had been completed.

Muslim militants free seven construction workers in Philippines

Zamboanga City, Philippines  - Suspected Muslim militants freed seven construction workers they seized a week ago on a southern Philippine island, a regional military spokeswoman said Tuesday.

First Lieutenant Esteffani Cacho said the victims were released unharmed on Monday in Tuburan town in Basilan province, 900 kilometres south of Manila.

Cacho said the hostages were turned over to the emissaries of Lamitan town Mayor Roderick Furigay, who negotiated for their release.

No ransom was paid for the release of the hostages who were undergoing debriefing in a military camp in Basilan, according to Cacho.

The construction workers were seized on December 2 while hauling beach sand in the town of Mohammad Ajul.
