Indian music industry celebrates Golden Globe for composer Rahman

New Delhi  - India's music industry on Monday celebrated the Golden Globe win for its most famous music composer AR Rahman and hoped it would be the Oscar next.

Rahman won the award on Sunday for best musical score for Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire, a film about a Mumbai slum boy who wins a game show.

"He will not stop here. I am sure he will win an Oscar too. He has put Indian music on top of the world. From here the future looks good and Rahman is solely responsible," music director Shankar Mahadevan of the Shankar-Eshaan-Loy trio was quoted as saying by PTI news agency.

Number of illegals trying to enter Spain drops 24 per cent

Madrid  - The number of undocumented immigrants known to have tried to enter Spain dropped by 24 per cent to about 37,000 people in 2008, Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba said Monday.

EU energy ministers hold emergency talks over Russian gas

Brussels - European Union energy ministers were meeting in Brussels on Monday to discuss ways of dealing with the shortage of Russian gas arriving via Ukraine.

The supply is now expected to resume on Tuesday following a deal on gas monitors signed in Brussels by representatives of Gazprom, Russia's state-owned gas monopoly, and Ukraine's Naftogaz, whose pipelines are used by Moscow to deliver gas to Europe.

But the long-standing dispute between the two sides has already forced many European countries to dig into their reserves.

It has also sparked a row between Slovakia and neighbouring Austria over Bratislava's plans to meet its own shortfall by re-opening a Soviet-era nuclear reactor shut down by the EU for safety reasons.

Norwegian doctors return after 11 days in Gaza

Oslo  - Two Norwegian doctors who spent an 11-day tour of duty at a hospital in Gaza returned home Monday, calling for an immediate halt to the violence and opening of the border posts to Gaza.

Erik Fosse and Mads Gilbert have treated scores of Palestinian patients injured during the Israeli offensive in Gaza that Monday entered day 17, and was estimated to have claimed over 900 lives.

"The situation in Gaza is much worse than we can describe," Gilbert told reporters, saying Gaza was a "huge humanitarian catastrophe." Supplies of food, medicine and other goods are severely stretched.

India to undertake first manned moon mission by 2020: ISRO

ISRO LogoSalem (Tamil Nadu) Jan. 12 : Encouraged by the successful launch of Chandrayan-I last October, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) wants to undertake the country''s first manned moon mission by 2020.

M. Annadurai, the project director of Chandrayaan-I on Sunday said that the ISRO proposed to undertake the country''s first manned moon mission by 2020 following the success of Chandrayaan-I.

The Chandrayaan-II mission is expected to be undertaken within a couple of years followed by Chandrayaan-III, Annadurai revealed.

India to include Canada''s Canola oil in existing Tariff Rated Quota, lauds doubling of trade

Kamal NathNew Delhi, Jan. 12 : Commerce Minister Kamal Nath met his Canadian counterpart Reginald Ritz on Monday and emphasised the need for furthering the cause of multilateral trading regime based on fair and transparent rules.

Nath further said that the global financial and economic crisis makes it even more compelling to conclude Doha Round. This, he said, would help in tackling problems like poverty and unemployment through expansive trade opportunities.
