Growth is the primary concern: Market analystsMumbai, Feb 16 : Market analysts in Mumbai believe that growth remains the primary concern for the Indian economy as the government tries to stimulate demand.

With elections just months away, the government sought to highlight its economic achievements while presenting the interim budget for 2009-10 on Monday.

A key highlight of the budget was the increased allocation towards the defense sector. Mukherjee claimed that the cross-border terrorism has been given a new dimension after the recent Mumbai attacks.

Sikh Jatha leaves for Pak to take part in Saka Nankana Sahib anniversary

Punjab MapAmritsar, Feb 16 : To mark the Saka Nankana Sahib anniversary on February 21, a Sikh Jatha (group) comprising nearly 150 devotees left for Pakistan this morning.

Chatin Singh, Former MP and member of the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) is leading the Jatha.

The event is being held to commemorate the anniversary of a movement launched in 1920 to free Gurdwaras from the control of Mahants who were supported by the British.

Singh said that this is for the first time that an SGPC-led Jatha is going to Pakistan to mark the Saka Nankana Sahib anniversary.

India, US, Pakistan face common threat, says US envoy

Richard HolbrookeNew Delhi - India, the United States and Pakistan face a common threat, Richard Holbrooke, the US special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, said Monday after talks with Indian leaders.

Holbrooke is in the Indian capital on the last leg of a fact-finding tour to the region which earlier took him to Pakistan and Afghanistan.

"India, US and Pakistan all have a common threat now ... an enemy that poses a direct threat to our leaderships, our capitals and our people," Holbrooke told reporters after meeting with Indian Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

Danish premier Rasmussen on European tour amid NATO rumours

Denmark MapCopenhagen- Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen is this week due to visit key European capitals, renewing speculation that he was aiming to secure support as future secretary-general of the defence alliance NATO.

Rasmussen has refuted such speculation in the past, saying he still had unfinished work in Denmark and was intent on seeking a fourth term as premier.

Last year, Rasmussen said he would have a busy schedule visiting foreign capitals to shore up support for a successful outcome of an international climate conference to be held in Copenhagen in December.

New ‘sharia’ accord signed between NWFP government and TNSM

PakistanPeshawar, Feb. 16 : A new `sharia' law has been signed between the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) government and Tahrik-e-Nifaz Shariat Muhammadi (TNSM) in Pakistan.

"An agreement has been signed between the government of NWFP and Maulana Sufi Mohammed. All laws against sharia will be abolished and sharia will be enforced under this justice system," The News quoted NWFP Information Minister Iftikhar Hussain, as saying.

The new agreement would be covering the troubled areas of Swat Valley, and Malakand district of NWFP also.

German police seek three Swedes after neo-Nazi violence

neo-Nazi violence Jena, Germany - German police were seeking three Swedish nationals Monday, two days after neo-Nazis assaulted a group of leftists at a highway rest area at the end of a day of demonstrations in Dresden.

A 42-year-old man was hospitalized with serious head injuries in the eastern city of Jena after the Saturday evening violence.

Police took the names of 41 far-rightists riding in a chartered coach after the incident. They stressed Monday they had no evidence yet that the Swedes on the coach were specifically to blame, but wanted to catch them before they left Germany to go home to Sweden.
