Bulgaria presses EU for permission to restart old reactors

Bulgaria MapSofia - Hit hard by the Russia-Ukraine gas row, Bulgaria on Tuesday stepped up the pressure for permission to re-start its old nuclear reactors, shut down in 2006 amid European safety concerns.

"We must prepare without delay to re-start the third reactor at Kosloduy," President Georgi Parvanov said. Bulgaria shut down two 440-megawatt, Soviet-era reactors shortly before it joined the European Union in 2007, meeting Brussels' demands.

Two even older reactors were turned off in 2002.

Parvanov said the accession contract with the EU allows Bulgaria to revive the two newer reactors in case of a crisis.

VW shares up after Porsche takes majority stake

Porsche-Volkswagen LogoStuttgart - Volkswagen shares rose sharply on Tuesday, a day after sports carmaker Porsche announced it had acquired a majority stake in its German rival.

VW shares climbed to 287.09 euros (384 dollars) on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, up 12.7 per cent from Monday when Porsche disclosed it had increased its stake in Europe's biggest carmaker to 50.76 per cent.

The move gives Porsche a controlling say in Swedish commercial vehicles maker Scania and obliges it to make a takeover offer for the company.

Oil and cooking gas transporters had joined the strike, a representative of the forum which organized for the strike said.

The All-India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) is demanding a 10- rupees-per-litre (20-US-cents) reduction in the price of diesel and and some service tax exemptions to help the sector deal with the economic slowdown.

Taiwan needs time to digest Chinese leader's cross-strait comments

Ma Ying-jeouTaipei - Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou Tuesday said his government still needs time to digest the content of a goodwill speech on cross-strait relations recently made by his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao.

"We are still making further efforts to try to understand what exactly (Hu) wanted to convey through his speech," said Ma in a meeting with a group of visiting US scholars.

Through a press statement, he said the Chinese leader "had in certain aspect made concrete responses to some of Taiwan's concerns." Ma did not elaborate.
