General Mills faces lawsuit for ‘misleading’ consumers
A case has been filed against General Mills, the maker of Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Lucky Charms, Fiber One and Cheerios. The lawsuit filed by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), a consumer group, has alleged that the company has been selling its product Cheerios Protein with false pretense.
Michael Jacobson, president of CSPI, explained that when one looks at the box of the new product, there is an impression that the product has a lot more protein than original Cheerios. But they have compared the nutritional value of the products and came to know that a single serving of Cheerios Protein has 7 grams of protein and 17 grams of sugar.
On the other hand, the traditional Cheerios have 3 grams of protein and a single gram of sugar. As per the Institute of Medicine, protein intake for men and women is 56 grams and 46 grams. Jacobson was of the view that when one looks at the pack then it seems to be very little addition to the protein value.
Another thing found by the group is the nutrition facts for regular Cheerios are for 28 grams of cereal. On the other hand, the listed protein and sugar contents for Cheerios Protein correspond to 55 grams. After adjusting all the factors, the new product, Cheerios Protein, has been found to be having around a gram more protein by weight. CSPI said that the new product is not as good as it promises.
