G8’s ENR sale restrictions may affect India

G8’s ENR sale restrictions may affect IndiaIndia has declined to comment on G8 ban over nuclear fuel cycle sales saying that it will study the text, prohibiting the sale of ENR items and technology to non NTP signatory countries like India.

G8 declared in its recent meet, "Pending completion of work in the NSG [on new rules restricting ENR sales], we agree to implement [the "clean text" developed at the 20 November 2008 Consultative Group meeting] on a national basis in the next year."

It should be recalled that India was granted special exemption by the Nuclear Suppliers Group last September despite the fact that India has not singed Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty.

However, some Indian official acknowledged that the development may dilute country's special exemptions granted by NSG for free nuclear commerce. It will increase the cost effectiveness of reprocessing and enrichment operations as all required equipment have to manufacture locally in the country.

According to G8 diplomatic sources, India will no longer be able to avail ENR items from countries such as Russia and France, apparently, shutting doors of ENR trade with G8 countries.
