French are world champions in eating, drinking and sleeping

Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)Paris - No one in the developed world spends more time than the French on eating, drinking and sleeping, according to a study by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) issued Monday in Paris.

The study, titled Measuring Leisure in OECD Countries, found that French men and women above the age of 15 spend an average of about 2 hours and 15 minutes a day eating and drinking. That's nearly twice as much as Mexicans, Canadians and Americans.

Only New Zealanders come close to the French, spending an average of about 2 hours 10 minutes a day at the table or the juice bar.

The French are also number one among residents of industrial countries when it comes to sleeping, the OECD study found.

A French adult sleeps an average of 8 hours and 50 minutes a day, well ahead of the second-place Americans, at just below 8 hours and 40 minutes.

The Koreans and Japanese sleep the least among OECD member nations, both averaging about 7 hours 50 minutes a day, according to the OECD.

The study also found that the Belgians have the most leisure time a day, an average of 6 hours 39 minutes, just ahead of the Germans who - contrary to their image as obsessed workers - enjoy 6 hours 34 minutes of daily downtime on average.

Mexicans and Japanese were found to have the least leisure time among the 30 OECD members. (dpa)
