France has no plans to increase forces in Afghanistan - Kouchner

France has no plans to increase forces in Afghanistan - Kouchner Paris - Despite the degenerating security situation in Afghanistan, France has no plans to send more troops to the conflict- torn country, Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said Tuesday in Paris.

"We do not have the intent (to send more troops). We have just increased the number of soldiers in the region," Kouchner told reporters.

However, Paris wants to increase its commitment to the training of Afghan security forces. "That is out specialty," Kouchner said after inaugurating the new French envoy to Kabul, Pierre Lellouche.

Lellouche said that the situation in Afghanistan is deteriorating. "The country is at a dead end and the security situation has worsened significantly," he said.

The 57-year-old Lellouche said he would make proposals to try and influence American policy in Afghanistan, which has become a top foreign policy priority for US President Barack Obama.

According to Foreign Ministry data, France currently has some 3,300 troops in the area, including military instructors. (dpa)
