Four Tennessee counties devastated by flooding declared 'major disaster' by Obama.
According to the official reports, U. S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday declared a major disaster area in four Tennessee counties devastated by flooding.
It has been reported that the declaration requires federal resources to be deployed to Cheatham, Davidson, Hickman and Williamson counties to aid in the recovery from the severe floods and winds that have killed at least 29 people and wreaked havoc across the Tennessee and Ohio river valleys since April 30.
The White House said in a statement that grants and loans to cover home repairs and temporary housing will be part of the federal assistance. Gracia B. Szczech was named as the federal coordinating officer for recovery operations.
Damage surveys and assessments are still under way, and more assistance will be allocated as necessary.
Weather. com said on Tuesday that a flood warning remains in effect for parts of the Cumberland, Duck, Buffalo and Red rivers, with some rivers still experiencing record flooding. Flood conditions will persist over the next couple of days, and officials said the death toll may continue to rise even as the waters recede.
It was further reported that Nashville has been particularly hard hit by the high waters, with landmarks including the football stadium and the Grand Ole Opry House under water. (With Inputs from Agencies)
