FM allays private sector fears over borrowing plans

Pranab MukherjeeAllaying the fears of private sector, Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said that government's program to borrow Rs 4,57,000 crore for the fiscal would not impact the credit requirement of the private sector.

Government's borrowing plan for the year 2010-11 is around Rs 6,000 crore higher than the previous year level.

Mukherjee, speaking at the RBI's platinum jubilee function in Mumbai, told, "So far as market borrowing is concerned, last year it was arranged in cooperation with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in such a manner that the private sector did not feel any difficulty in meeting its legitimate credit requirement."

Mukherjee assured to control food inflation very soon and termed it as a temporary phenomenon. He also attributed higher Minimum Support Price for cereals for pushing inflation in the country.

Meanwhile, the yield on 10-year government securities rose 11 basis points while the yield on the papers maturing in 2020 touched its highest level in 17-month by increasing 7.97 per cent on Friday.
