Financial Times to stop printing in South Africa

Financial Times to stop printing in South AfricaFinancial Times (FT), UK-based financial publication, might be planning to stop printing in South Africa in the middle of this year.

FT spokeswoman Emily Gibbs has reportedly said that the company is planning to close down its print site at Caxton Publishing in Johannesburg on 24 July, 2013. The company is planning to stop printing in the country a little more than 10 years after it entered the local market in South Africa.

"The decision reflects the increasingly multi-channel media consumption habits of our readers, as well as our continued investment in producing premium, award-winning editorial content from around the globe," she said.

The publication has a print run of 1400 daily copies including weekend editions in the country. The amount is very small compared to an average daily readership of 2.2-million readers worldwide for the company. The Financial Times has about 4.5-million registered online users as well as 285,000 paying digital subscribers from around the world.

South African readers get their copies from subscriptions or from selected news vendors. Meanwhile, the latest figures showed that the newspaper circulation fell 3.85 per cent compared to 275,375, recorded during the month of December.
