FDA issues Warning Notice to Five Different Caffeine Powder Makers

Letters of warning have been sent to five different makers of caffeine powder. The US Food and Drug Administration has sent letter as the product can cause health risks to consumers. The companies have been given time period of 15 working days to respond to the letters.

The FDA has sent the warning letters to SPN, LLC dba Smartpowders, Purebulk Inc., Kreativ Health Inc., Hard Eight Nutrition LLC and Bridge City Bulk. The letter has raised concerns with regard to recommended dose and product labeling.

As per experts, one teaspoon of caffeine powder is equivalent to having 28 cups of coffee. But some of the product’s labels suggest of having serving sizes equivalent to a quarter teaspoon. Powdered caffeine is a dietary supplement and is unregulated.

Currently, the agency does not have authority to withdraw these products from market. Therefore, it is cracking down on companies that sell the powder in huge quantities. Caffeine powder is quite popular among bodybuilders to get quick energy boost.

The FDA said there is a very minute difference between having a safe amount of it and a toxic dose of caffeine. “Furthermore, safe quantities of these products can be nearly impossible to measure accurately with common kitchen measuring tools. Volume measures, such as teaspoons, are not precise enough to calculate how many milligrams of caffeine are in the serving size”, affirmed FDA. The product is dissolved into water and other beverages and can be added to food as well.
