Exercise – The Best Medicine To Banish Anger In Men
A new research has revealed that regular workout helps banishing anger in males.
A research group examined irritated mood and emotions in men.
The subjects saw anger-inducing scenes before and after 30 minutes of leg-cycling workout at 65% of their maximal oxygen uptake.
The researchers assessed oscillatory brain activity, the event-related late-positive potential (LPP), and self-reports of anger intensity during picture viewing.
Lead investigator Nathaniel Thom, stress physiologist said, "The major novel finding from this study is that exercise protected against angry mood induction, almost like taking aspirin to prevent a heart attack."
"In other words, exercise really is like medicine. However, exercise did not change EEG responses during elicitation of angry emotions in our subjects," Thom added.
With this opening research as a backdrop, Thom and his fellow workers suggested that future researches dig out the mechanisms underlying the effect of workout on lessening angriness and should mull over anger-induction methods for study purposes.
The study researchers also suggested testing the effects of chronic exercise training on anger and its expression. A long-term exercise routine may deliver different results.
The study results were presented at the ACSM's 57th Annual Meeting in Baltimore. (With Inputs from Agencies)
