Egypt's Mubarak makes first appearance since grandson's death

Egyptian President Hosny Mubarak Cairo  - Egyptian President Hosny Mubarak on Sunday made his first public appearance since the death of his 12-year-old grandson last week.

Mubarak appeared on Egyptian state television in a meeting with Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit and intelligence chief Omar Suleiman. It was the first time the president had been seen in public since his grandson, Mohammed Alaa, died on May 17.

Last week, the Egyptian leader canceled a planned trip to Washington to meet US President Barack Obama because he was grieving for the boy. Egypt's state-run media have not reported the cause of Alaa's death, beyond saying it was due to "medical complications."

Cairo's government-funded daily al-Akhbar on Sunday led with a banner headline announcing Sunday's meeting alongside a file photo of the president. A few days prior, the government-funded al-Gomhuriyya newspaper headlined, "The president is well."

Abul Gheit and Suleiman are scheduled to travel to Washington on Tuesday in Mubarak's stead.

Mubarak is still scheduled to meet Obama when the US president visits Cairo on June 4. (dpa)
