Egg prices jump as bird flu spreads across many states

Nation's egg supply has tightened due to the death of millions of hens from bird flu. Due to this, the prices have started going up in Mississippi.

If you will go to buy a dozen eggs from area Kroger stores then they will cost you $1.99. Nobody knows how much more the egg prices are going to climb. But it is odd that the cost of farm fresh eggs has held steady.

Shoppers at Fresh Way Produce on Old Canton Road in Ridgeland are aware that fresh farm eggs will be a little bit higher as compared to their regular grocery story eggs. Presently, they are $2.99 a dozen, and last year also they were same $2.99 a dozen. This shows that the price has not changed. But, it's a totally different story at the neighborhood grocery.

Nan Morgan said that he uses eggs just a few times per week. Morgan said that there is nothing like he uses them every day, thus in case of them going up, it wouldn't make that much difference. He mentioned that if he used them every day then he would have considered it.

One shopper, Benae Riles, cooks eggs for her daughter. She said that if she has to pay more for those eggs then she would prefer to go for more expensive farm fresh eggs. She mentioned that she just tries to get the best for her family. By saying this she has no intention of rationing egg use.

According to the analysts, the outbreak of Avian Flu among egg-laying hens in the mid-West was not like something ever experienced in the industry, due to which it has become impossible to predict a recovery.
