Few week ago, a 92 year old man suffered from an acute myocardial infarction (death of heart muscle) and was hospitalized in Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Mumbai.He was given treatment as well as medication for 15 days but, all in vain. He still continued complaining about severe chest pain.

After viewing his unstable condition, Dr Dalal without losing a single minute, has suggested option of angiography. But his family members were seen worried about invasive procedures as he was 92 years old.

However, Dr. Dalal felt the patient had been fairly active prior to the episode, so he finally did his coronary angiogram, which revealed a severe stenosis in the LAD.

After further long discussion with the patient's relatives, he went ahead with his team and did angioplasty and stent implantation.

The surgery did miracle, as the patient became stable and pain free. Infact, he was discharged two days later from the hospital.

Talking to our correspondent, Dr. Dalal said, this case shows that age alone should not be a consideration but the overall health and present clinical condition is the main factor. The patient's angiography revealed a single lesion with the rest of the arteries being normal, suggesting that aging is not always associated with severity.

Dr. Dalal further stated that his team has done several cases above 80 years but above 90 years is indeed rare at least in India. However this case illustrates that whatever the age, relatively less invasive procedures like angiography can be done safely.
