Discount retailers surging ahead in UK market
Experts have said that discount retail chains are increasing surging ahead in the UK market as households face pressure on income and expenses.
Retail chains including Lidl and Aldi are increasing their market share in the UK market by offering attractive discounts. Morrisons has said that discount grocers Lidl and Aldi have become a great threat to the supermarket industry and have created a crisis in the market.
Tesco and Morrisons have both lost market shares in recent times as discount chains are increasing expanding their presence in the market. Tesco has said that it will focus on competing with discounters Aldi and Lidl as they have been outperforming traditional Big Four of Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's and Morrisons in recent times.
Morrisons chief executive Dalton Philips admitted that discount chains are affecting business in the country. The retail chain recorded a £176 million pre-tax loss during the previous year and has said that it will spend £1 billion in order to cut prices for competing better with discount chains. It recorded a Tesco and Sainsbury2.2 per cent fall in like-for-like sales during the previous year. Tesco and Sainsbury have both said that their market shares have fallen as discount chains increasing attract shoppers in the UK.
