Despite Government Efforts, Smoking rate High among Chinese Women

Chinese government has started several anti-smoking campaigns which have also shown positive results except in exception that the number of women smokers in the country has tripled in recent years.

New data released from CTR Market Research conducted in China showed that the proportion of Chinese who smoked in the past 12 months dropped from 28.3% in 205 to 21.3% in last year.

But the saddening truth the data showed is that smoking trend in women was found to be quite different. Although women smokers are lesser than males, the number of women smokers tripled to 3.3% in the past four years.

The trend is driven by a growing number of young, well-educated and high-income female smokers, the market information provider said.

The survey revealed that the average income of female smokers was 7,818 yuan ($1,250) in 2014, whereas the average income for entire urban female population was only 4,367 yuan.

It also showed that almost half of all female smokers were between the age of 15 and 34 years, and 64% of them have at least a bachelor's degree or above.

The report published by research consultancy Kantar's China Insight, said, "It seems women with higher social status and more education is more open to the idea of picking up smoking".

Several women also addicted to smoking to deal with pressure, showed survey. It was found that almost 725 of female said that they opted for smoking to deal with stress as compared to 57% among all urban women.

On Monday, Chinese government formulated some new and stricter anti-smoking campaigns in Beijing. As per the new rules, anyone caught smoking outside schools or hospitals will be fined 200 yuan ($32), up from 10 yuan.
